Ice Box Canyon trail is listed as a 2.2 Mile trail. We did this hike on Feb 26. The end is near a seasonal waterfall.
The first half mile was trekking over rocks and dry washes and weaved through sagebrush and low growing evergreens. As we neared the canyon, the walls became steeper, the trees much taller, snow was now visible on the trail and on the peaks above. In the canyon shadows we quickly experienced cooler temperatures and encountered large patches of ice and hard pack snow. No longer was there a visible trail…only footprints etched in the snow marked the way.
We were not equipped to navigate on with only hiking shoes. We thought it advisable to call it a day and finish this trail on another visit. The canyon trail we did manage, provided excellent views of the sheer canyon walls and scenic views of the mountain peaks and towering landscape above. Soon we were back on the sunlit trail and returned to the trailhead parking lot with 1.59-mile hike in the books.
