After a coastal experience in Monterey that I’m sure we won’t soon forget, Deb and I ventured farther up the coast to the San Francisco area to enjoy the big city, its iconic sights and take in as much of the surrounding area as possible. After lengthy discussion we have decided to name our RV, “The Black Pearl” (BP). So, we parked “BP” at Travis AFB which is in close proximity to San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, and Sacramento. This has given us many opportunities to venture out with/without our canine free loaders “The Three Scallywags”.
We have taken several scenic drives through the wine country in Napa and Sonoma counties and have seen some of the area that was devastated by recent wildfires. Speaking of wildfires, we were so fortunate to have spent our time in Yosemite last month. Yosemite NP is closed due to wildfires and the impact the smoke has had on air quality.
Our weekends have given us the chance to go to the local Flea Market and Farmer’s Market to take in as much fresh fruit and veggies our fridge can hold. The surrounding area is abundant with agriculture, we have quickly learned to appreciate the freshness of farm to table dining.. Street tacos continue to draw our attention and Deb has gotten the “asada” recipe down to perfection at home. With the availability of local fresh ingredients, it’s hard to wrong.
In San Francisco, we have enjoyed day trips to Fisherman’s Wharf, Coit Tower & Little Italy, a weevey-windy drive down Lombard Street and of course a trip to Chinatown, where we easily exceeded our “carb count” on Dim Sum and Beef Chow Fun. We also found Chinese Mooncakes that were better than we remembered.
Museum highlights include the Rosie Riveter Museum where we met a real “Rosie” …Mary Torres, a morning photo shoot at the Palace of Fine Arts, we visited the California State Train Museum in Old Sacramento….It was an amazing collection of California rail history. Inside displays were very well done. Outside, it was 104 degrees and decided to call it a day. A return visit for sure, there is so much to see in Old Sacramento along the river. Our last cultural dip was the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). 7 floors of creativity on display. Deb was blown away by the film photography collection and we both enjoyed the Susan Meiselas exhibit. A remarkable, courageous woman.
Our stay in the Bay area has been extended, so that we can get some RV maintenance done locally while its convenient. This will open more opportunities for adventuring!! Oh darn!
